UAS Capstone Strategy Session

During Class time on November 20, my classmates and I engaged in a "Capstone Project Strategy Session". This session was used to discuss our progress in our capstone ideas as well as discuss the potential for combining into one group. Through careful discussion, the eight of us decided to come together to work on a project together. For this project, we will each take on a specified role to create GIS maps, 3D models, and other data sets that could be found useful for the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater Park. 

The exact plan for what we are aiming to do is still under discussion. There is a wide range of terrain in this park: a parking lot, an amphitheater, soccer fields, and a riverbed. Hopefully we will be able to accomplish some data collection surrounding how rainfall affects the flooding of the park. We will be provided with a wide range of aircraft and sensors, so our team will develop specific flight missions in the next coming weeks. We have established individual specialized roles. These roles are listed below:


  • Kyle – Operations Management 1 
  • Evan -- Data Manager 
  • Ryan – Payload integrator/ system integration specialist 
  • Dylan – Ground Control Lead 
  • Krysta – Lead Author 
  • Ian – Payload integrator/ System integration specialist 
  • Thomas – Project Management/ Operations Management 2 
  • Todd – Lead Flight Engineer

As 'Operations Management 1', my lead duties will be to create/maintain the flight schedule based on crew availability, payload integration, weather restrictions, and other undetermined factors. The majority of my responsibilities will be crew resource management. This is beneficial as this is a skill I want to develop for my professional career. 

Over the next few class periods we will continue to develop a more refined plan for our project, and I will post updates to my blog accordingly.

First Successful Bramor Flight

On March 27th, we completed our first flight with the C-astral Bramor. The operation ran smoothly with a successful data collection and landing. The weather for the day was around 50 degrees and winds were below 5 mph, creating excellent flight conditions. In order to assure safe procedures and proper flight execution, we followed our checklists closely. It was very beneficial to perform the dry runs from a couple weeks back. Because we ran those dry runs, we felt secure in how the operation was going to run, and eliminated confusion from happening in the field. To begin the flight day, I arrived early to the classroom along with Evan to plan out the mission, as well as go back over the recovery and parachute procedures for the aircraft. Progress Report #8

This week in class, our new aircraft the C-Astral Bramor. This is a catapult launched and parachute recover fixed wing aircraft. I only have a small range of fixed-wing UAV experience, so this is a great learning opportunity for me. During the first day of class, we all unboxed the aircraft and simulated a mission which involved: lab checklists, preflight construction, preflight checklists, and flight area mapping. As operations manager, I led the preflight operations (as pictured below). I led the team through the paper checklists provided by c-astral, however at certain points, parts of the checklists were confusing. Luckily, c-astral's ground control station includes a helpful expanded guide on checklists procedures giving us an extra sentence or two about things to do. Progress Report #1

Our team has wrapped up our first week of classes and are now ready to begin moving forward with this capstone project. During the first week, we began laying the ground work for our flights, data storage, and mission planning. As operations manager, I have begun creating the flight schedule and flight plan files. Today in class, Evan and I worked with the ArcGIS software to create the mission files, these files will be brought into the mission planning software to ensure precise data collection in each of the specified areas. On Wednesday we plan to work with Thomas to complete this files and come up with five letter names for each of them. As I complete the flight schedule I am keeping a couple considerations in mind: I want to have teams of two or three out in the field together and scheduled flights every week as well as people ready to fly in the case of a sudden event (such as flooding).
